ESL Courses

Required Courses

There are (8) courses required to complete the program. Each course is 3 credits.

ESL 011: Academic ESL I*
This course covers grammatical concepts such as: distinguishing present and past verb tenses and utilizing correct word order in statements, questions, and negatives. Students will be expected to use learned grammatical structures in speaking and writing at the paragraph level. (Prerequisite: Placement test and oral interview is required.)

ESL 012: Academic ESL II*
This course covers grammatical concepts such as: distinguishing future verb tenses and utilizing correct word order in statements, questions, and negatives, subject-verb agreements, and select modals in the present and past. Students will be expected to use learned grammatical structures in speaking and writing at the paragraph level. (Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or higher in ESL 011 or as a result of a placement test.)

ESL 015: Writing Through Reading I
Students will analyze texts and strong emphasis will be placed on building vocabulary and acquiring writing skills in order to improve their ability to express their ideas in writing.

ESL 021: Academic Intermediate ESL I*
This course covers grammatical concepts such as: utilizing gerunds and infinitives, the passive voice, and select modals in the present and past. Students will be expected to use learned grammatical structures in speaking and writing at the paragraph level. (Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or higher in ESL 012 and ESL 015 or as a result of a placement test.)

ESL 022: Academic Intermediate ESL II*
This course covers grammatical concepts such as: causative verb patterns, phrasal verbs, and the conditional. Students will be expected to use learned grammatical structures in speaking and writing at the paragraph level. (Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or higher in ESL 021 or as a result of a placement test.)

ESL 025: Writing Through Reading II
This course is designed to develop a strong foundation for academic writing. Strong emphasis will be placed on analyzing syntax, learning sentence structure rules, and utilizing sentence variety. Texts of intermediate difficulty will be used as the vehicle for writing response assignments.

ESL 031: Academic Advanced ESL I*
This course covers grammatical concepts such as: relative clauses and reported speech. Students will be expected to use learned grammatical structures in speaking and writing at the paragraph level. (Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or higher in ESL 022 and ESL 025 or as result of a placement test.)

ESL 032: Academic Advanced ESL II*
This course is designed to introduce essay organization and development in order to prepare students for college-wide courses that require writing (Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or higher in ESL 031 or as a result of a placement test.)

*Grammar courses are 7 weeks each and meet twice a week.

Additional Classes

ESL 103: Listening and Speaking for Non-Native Speakers
This course is designed for English as a second language speakers at the elementary-intermediate level who need to develop their listening and speaking skills. Students will work on basic pronunciation rules, listening cues, and useful vocabulary. They will learn how to respond to a variety of everyday topics, giving students the skills and confidence to communicate in everyday situations, including the classroom.

ESL 104: Conversation Strategies for Non-Native Speakers
This course is designed for English as a second language speakers at the intermediate-advanced level who wish to develop their oral communication skills. A variety of media will be used to stimulate conversation and expression. Students will give presentations on topics.
