BS Business, offered through New Jersey City University

Accounting – The accounting curriculum will prepare the student to pursue a career in either public or private accounting. Other than federal agencies, major accounting firms in the area offer our students internships and job opportunities. Several graduates in accounting opt for careers in other areas of business since the accounting specialization provides them useful skills that many businesses require. Moreover, the accounting specialization provides the required background to those students planning on going into an M.B.A. or law degree. The accounting curriculum also prepares students to sit for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) examination. To meet the educational requirements to sit for the CPA examination in New Jersey, students will need 150 hours of college credits. Therefore, the Undergraduate program combined with the Master of Science in Accounting (see below) is designed to meet those requirements. Students planning to take the CPA examination may join the program not only to meet the requirements of the exam, but also to earn a master’s degree in accounting. Brookdale’s Business Administration AA Degree: Accounting Option is the preferred associate degree for this program.

Administration/Travel & Tourism/International Business – This specialization provides business students with broad managerial and administrative skills that will enable them to obtain managerial positions in private and public organizations. An advantage of the general business concentration is its unique breath in course content which prepares business graduates for establishing their own businesses.

Finance – The finance major prepares students for managerial positions in finance. These include credit managers, bank managers, portfolio managers, foreign currency specialists, commodity analysts, trust managers, stock brokerage account executives and investment advisors. The functions and responsibilities of financial managers define financial management. While the specifics vary among organizations, some finance tasks are basic. Funds are raised from external financial resources and allocated for different uses. The flow of funds involved in the operations of an enterprise is monitored. These key financial functions must be performed in all organizations – from business firms to government units or agencies, charitable groups and other nonprofit organizations. Students specializing in finance, therefore, will gain insights into how funds are raised and invested, assets and liabilities are managed, as well as gain an understanding of strategies for financial planning and control, and the role of financial institutions, instruments and domestic markets and international markets. Brookdale’s Business Administration AA Degree is the preferred associate degree for this program.

Management – The management specialization combines basic management courses, which stress fundamental management concepts and techniques, with advanced management courses in the functional and analytical areas within institutional specialties. This rigorous combination produces a coordinated program in management education with two aims. First, to educate all students in concepts and basic skills to different types of organizations – business, government, health services, education and insurance. Management students can expect to work in management positions in personnel, insurance, production, banking, marketing, hotel and motel operations, restaurants, food distribution and management, retailing, government, and credit management. Brookdale’s Business Administration AA Degree is the preferred associate degree for this program.

Marketing – The success or failure of a firm depends on the effectiveness of its marketing program. A firm will have little need for accountants, finance, production managers and so on if they cannot successfully market its products. The demand for marketers is soaring. Thus, marketing has become one of the most important components of many businesses in the US. Consequently, the marketing field generally offers lucrative career opportunities to many college graduates compared to other fields in business, liberal arts and sciences. The marketing concentration also provides students broad entrepreneurial knowledge that is required to start a business. Brookdale’s Business Administration AA Degree is the preferred associate degree for this program.
