Health Sciences Admissions Testing for Nursing and Allied Health Programs

Candidates for entry into one of Brookdale’s Health Sciences Programs (Nursing and Allied Health) must take an admissions test. Click here for pre-requisites. When you are eligible for entry into the program you will be sent an invitation for admissions testing. The required tests are:

  • Nursing – HESI A2 Admissions Exam. See below for additional information
  • Radiologic Technology – HOBET V Test. Passing Score is 50. Click here for preparation materials.
  • Respiratory Therapy- HOBET V Test. Passing Score is 50. Click here for preparation materials.

**Please note that you should show up no less than 4 hours before closing in order to have enough time to complete your test. Hours can be found on the Testing Center homepage.

Preparation materials for each of the tests are also available from Brookdale’s College Bookstore.

HOBET V Book Rental- The College Bookstore now has the HOBET V book available for rental. For a fee of $25.00, students may rent the preparation book for a 2 week period. HESI A2 Test for Nursing Admissions – Frequently Asked Questions

Students wishing to enter Brookdale’s RN program must first take and pass the the HESI A2 test. 

How is the test taken?
The test is on the computer, and must be taken at the Testing Center in Lincroft. No appointment is necessary, but you must come in at least 4 hours before closing time to take the test. Check out our hours for the current semester.

Does it cost anything?
Yes, the cost is $40.00 (subject to change), and must be paid for before taking the test. The Testing Center accepts any form of payment – cash, credit/debit card, money order, or check.

What should I bring with me?
In order to test, you must bring your permission slip (which was given to you or mailed to you by Admissions, which means you have met all pre-requisites to test), your form of payment, and a government-issued photo ID card. Your driver’s license, passport, Brookale ID, or county ID are all acceptable forms of payment. In addition, you should preregister for the test by going to Elsivier’s Website. Instructions for preregistering are on the permission slip you were given or can be found here. You do not have to preregister if you have tested already, but must bring the login and password you created the first time to the Testing Center in order to retest.

What is on the test?
The test consists of two components, Math and English. The English has 3 sub-components; Reading, Grammar, and Vocabulary.

What is the passing score?
You must earn a score of 75 per cent for the Math section and 75 per cent for the English component. You must achieve both scores in the same test session.

Is the test timed?
Yes, the test is timed for 4 hours, and each section is not timed separately. It is up to you to pace yourself over the 4 hour time period.

Is a calculator allowed?
A hand-held calculator is not allowed, but a calculator is built into the computer program.

If I don’t do well, may I retake the HESI A2?
Yes, you make take it again after two weeks, but only two times within a year. You will have to wait one full year from your test in order to take it again.

How can I prepare?
Brookdale’s Bookstore has preparation books available. You can also go to Elsevier’s website for additional materials.
