The 18-piece Brookdale Big Band, made up of professional musicians from the Central New Jersey area, specializes in jazz and swing music reminiscent of the Swing Bands of the 1940s and 50s. The Big Band, featuring vocalist Barbara Baron, was founded in 1985 by Joseph Accurso.
Jazz music is a synthesis of African and European music elements and its major contributors (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, etc.) are well known. The Brookdale Band specializes in the repertoire of many of these artists. The goal of the band is to recreate the excitement and dance rhythms associated with this music and provide the listener with a glimpse of an art form that is uniquely American.
General admission is $17; Seniors and Brookdale employees and alumni $15; and Brookdale students with ID $5.
