The Brookdale Big Band was founded in 1985 by Professor Joseph Accurso for the purpose of preserving and propagating that style period of Jazz music known as Swing. The band is comprised of professional musicians from the Central New Jersey area and features Brookdale Speech Professor Barbara Baron as solo-vocalist. Many of the other players in the group such as Gary Mazzaroppi (Les Paul, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) and Joe Mosello (Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis) are also well known.
The 18-piece group specializes in Jazz Swing music reminiscent of the Swing Bands of the period between 1940 and 1960. Jazz music is a synthesis of African and European music elements and its major contributors (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, etc.) are well known. The Brookdale Band specializes in the repertoire of many of these artists. The goal of the band is to provide the listener with a glimpse of an art form that is uniquely American – Jazz. It is America’s classical music and recognized internationally as such. It is uniquely indigenous to the American multicultural and multiracial experience.
