The HERO Campaign, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers to prevent drunk driving tragedies, will sponsor its first Monmouth County Hero Walk at Brookdale on June 8.
The Hero Walk is in remembrance of U.S. Navy Ensign John R. Elliott and all victims of drunken driving tragedies, including Freehold native and former Brookdale student Chad Horne. The Horne family will host the walk in Chad’s memory.
Ensign Elliott, 22, a resident of Egg Harbor Township, was killed in a head-on collision with a drunken driver in July 2000, two months after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy. Horne, 22, of Freehold, was traveling home from Pennsylvania in January 2010 when he was killed by a drunken driver.
