In memory of the late Roger Price Conant, a former Brookdale employee and Zumba enthusiast, students, staff, and community are invited to a “Zumbathon” scholarship fundraiser on Saturday, October 13, at Brookdale’s new Recreation & Events Center from 11 AM to 3 PM.
Led by some of the Jersey Shore’s finest Zumba® instructors, sessions of the Latin-inspired dance, along with fitness classes and fun fitness-related activities, will be offered all day. Everyone, regardless of experience, is welcome and encouraged to join in the dancing, which was one of Roger’s favorite activities.
“A few years ago I recognized Roger at my first Zumba® class - his arms and legs were everywhere, but he was having the best time! I admired Roger’s freedom and realized that Zumba® is about fitness and fun, rather than who is the best dancer,” said Kelli Sanders of Brookdale’s Conference and Facilities Services, who is helping coordinate the Zumbathon at Brookdale.
Our Zumba instructors are among the best from the central New Jersey region, and include Steppin’ Up Dance Studio’s Danielle Ippolito, Joanna Satelier from the Brookdale Fitness Center, and Nancy Eccles of Anytime Fitness in Brick.
Roger Conant founded a non-profit organization, “The Pure Vida Project,” which developed a surfing school in Costa Rica for underprivileged children; he also volunteered for The New Jersey Chapter of The Best Day Foundation which teaches surfing and snowboarding skills to special needs children. At Brookdale, Roger’s interests included leadership in the Campus Action Team for Sustainability.
To honor Roger’s work with children, kids 12 and under are free to participate in the Zumbathon. Brookdale student tickets are $10 and general admission for adults is $20. All proceeds benefit the Roger Conant Memorial Scholarship.
The Brookdale Dance Club will perform and (Haunted) Theater Club members will offer face painting for kids. Student from the Brookdale TV and Video Club are also supporting the effort and will be videotaping the event.
Donated door prizes will be given away, including items from fitness, nutrition, health and additional vendors. Light concessions will be available for purchase.
The Brookdale Community College Foundation will have Roger Conant Memorial Scholarship applications available at the event for current of potential students studying Media Studies, Communications Media, or Environmental and Earth Science disciplines.
Advance tickets may be purchased at the Information Desk in the Warner Student Life Center (732-224-2500). If still available on the day, tickets may be purchased at the door.
