For the second time in three years, the Brookdale men’s soccer team will be heading to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament. In a year where Region XIX receives two automatic bids, the Jersey Blues (17-3-1) dominated bracket A and the finishing touch was blanking Sussex (13-5) in the final round, 2-0, on Saturday morning.
Brookdale struck first on a goal by offensive player of the game, midfielder Robbie Fortune (Hazlet, NJ) off a cross pass from forward Kyle Annecchino (Ocean Grove, NJ) in the 14th minute. That wouldn’t be all in the first half, as Ryan Morris (Freehold, NJ) would put up a perfectly placed ball for Andy Caban (Red Bank, NJ) to score on a header in the 37th minute. The defense would hold the lead, as Brookdale finished victors, 2-0.
The shutout is Brookdale’s 17th on the year – and third in a row. For his efforts in the backfield, defender Justin Gregory (Wall, NJ) was named the defensive player of the game. First year coach Dave Janezic will now lead his team to Herkimer Community College for the NJCAA Division III National Tournament, which commences on November 8th.
