“How Pro-Pollution Advocates Risk Our Health”

Rep. Frank Pallone (Democrat-6th District) will address students and guests in a “Science Monday” meeting  (free and open to all) on April 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Warner Student Life Center.

The meeting will include Brookdale students staff along with members of the NJ Friends of Clearwater and the Jersey Shore (Monmouth) Group of the Sierra Club.

Rep. Pallone will describe his ongoing fight to prevent the dismantling of 30 years of environmental regulations that protect our health and safety. He will talk to students about corporate polluters’ claims that environmental regulations are the cause of the recent recession and current unemployment; how big polluters blame the rise in gasoline prices on environmental regulations; and how polluters lobbies add anti-environmental amendments onto “must pass” bills that should receive bipartisan support.

In the 112th Congress, Rep. Pallone continues to serve as a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over issues pertaining to energy, environment, health care, commerce and telecommunications.

Rep. Pallone is the top Democrat on the Committee's Sub-Committee on Health, which has sole jurisdiction over Medicaid, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and shares jurisdiction of Medicare with the Ways and Means Committee. The Health Sub-Committee oversees public health, biomedical programs, food and drug safety, mental health and research, hospital construction and all health care homeland security-related issues.

A pre-lecture buffet will be available for Brookdale students and guests at 6 PM; contributions from non-students are encouraged to defray the costs. Groups are welcome; please advise of any special seating requests.
