What do I have to do to challenge out of the first two semesters?
- Apply and register for the nursing advanced placement challenge
- Be successful on the math exam
- Test out on select nursing skills
- Complete a satisfactory assignment
Can I also challenge out of the third semester?
- You must do all of the above plus the following:
- Test out on additional nursing skills
- Achieve a satisfactory score on a standardized exam.
What do I need to apply and/or participate in the challenge?
- Current New Jersey LPN license
- Counselor meeting
- Complete Brookdale Community College Application
- Complete Nursing Program Application
- Provide official transcripts for any prior course work
- Must attend information session
- Must successfully pass criminal history background check.
How much does it cost?
- The student must pay for the credits that are articulated or challenged. The articulated credits are 3 for NURS 160, 7 for NURS 161 and 8 for NURS 162. Click here for scheduled tuition and fees.
- Textbook costs will apply
- Nurse kit for the skills lab
What if I am not successful in the challenge?
- Students who are not successful in the challenge may register for NURS 162 during the fall or spring semester

When will I start the nursing program?
- Students move into the nursing program at the level at which they were successful in the challenge.
- Students are placed in either the fall or spring semester after they complete advanced placement. Admission is based on availability of spots in the semester for which you are registering. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Original date of application to the program is used to prioritize admission date. Students who are not admitted in the Fall are guaranteed Spring admission
When can I expect to graduate?
- If you place into NURS 162, you will be able to graduate in 3 semesters.
- If you place in NURS 261, you will be able to graduate in 2 semesters.
When does it occur?
- The nursing advanced placement challenge process is done once a year only in the six week Summer I session.
- Admission into the Advanced Placement challenge is contingent upon the availability of space.
How much time does it take?
- The Advanced Placement challenge course is offered over a six week time period during the Summer I session.
- The standardized comprehensive final exam is scheduled to be taken in the nursing computer lab. You have 3 hours to complete the exam If you have a documented disability please notify the instructor and accommodations will be made.
- This is a time intensive course requiring independent study, skills validation (each skill requires you to schedule a test out time in the skills lab).
Where does the challenge occur?
- Testing and skills review sessions take place on the Brookdale campus. Review sessions and discussion forums may be completed at home on your own computer, on any available computer on the Brookdale campus, or in the Brookdale nursing computer lab which provides support with accessing the on-line sessions.
What if I choose not to challenge NURS 162?
- You may choose to articulate into the Nursing Program starting in the third nursing class (NURS 162). You will still need to successfully complete the math exam, skills validation for all NURS 160 and 161 skills, and a concept map, and receive credit for NURS 162 in order to receive credit for NURS 161. We encourage you to review the content on Test Success, Legal/Ethical, Infection Control, Fluids & Electrolytes, the Nursing Process and Oncology. These content areas are taught in NURS 160 and 161 and will be included in the standardized comprehensive final exam that you will complete at the end of NURS 162.

What other courses do I have to take in addition to nursing?
- All questions regarding graduation requirements will be answered by your counselor.
- All questions regarding pre requisite science classes will be answered by your counselor.
I took anatomy and physiology (or English, Psychology, microbiology) a long time ago-- how do I know if I need to retake it?
- Meeting with the counselor will help you to determine what other courses need to be retaken.
