Twelve O’Clock High is a 1949 war film about crews of the US Army’s Eighth air force who flew daylight bombing missions against Germany and occupied France during the early days of World War II. Directed by Henry King, it stars Gregory Peck as Brigadier General Frank Savage, a callous general, who assumes command of a bomber squadron based in England. At first, the new commander has little rapport with the bomber group, whose loyalties still belong with their previous commander. As they continue to fly dangerous missions, however, the group and their new leader develop mutual respect and admiration until the once-alienated commander feels that his men are part of a family. The film’s now classic climax is one of the most emotionally intense scenes of any World War II drama. It is a realistic portrayal of the heroics and perils of war and also stars Oscar-winner Dean Jaggar, and Gary Merrill.

Anzio is a movie about the invasion of the area surrounding the Italian town of Anzio (Operation Shingle) as seen through the eyes of a journalist played by Robert Mitchum. Although initially unopposed, the landings get bogged down in trench fighting for months before the Allies can move inland against the Germans. In some very good combat action sequences, the stoic Mitchum, a battle hardened correspondent, has to come to grips with his pacifist convictions as he goes out on patrol with GIs and then must fight his way back with them. The film also stars Peter Falk, Earl Holliman and Arthur Kennedy who play stereotypical soldiers and who also gain self-revelation during combat. Definitely a thought provoking movie inspired by a one of the war’s most controversial amphibious operations. Produced in 1968, it is directed by Edward Dmytryk.

Enemy at the Gates is a 2001 motion picture directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud that depicts events surrounding the Battle of Stalingrad along the Volga River in Russia between1942-1943. Focusing on a duel that develops between a Soviet Army sniper played by Jude Law and a German counterpart played by Ed Harris, the film captures during very dramatic combat scenes the two snipers as they stalk each other within the battle-scarred city. It also captures the combat fanaticism and desperateness that reduced Stalingrad to rubble by the end of the epic struggle. The movie is based on the non-fiction book of the same title written by William Craig.
