Studying Abroad is an amazing and life-changing experience! However, like all great adventures, study abroad requires a little extra planning and a lot of open mindedness. Because the International Education Center (IEC) offers students such a vast scope of program options throughout the world, the following guide is a brief outline of considerations designed to help you prepare for your international studies!
Academics
Students who need to fulfill specific course requirements or who are participating in majors with strictly outlined curricula will have more defined program option compared to students with more flexibility in their course selections. Meeting with both a Development Specialist (counselor) as well as an IEC Advisor will help students determine which program options may best suit student needs.
Language
Before your resign yourself to thinking you are limited by your language abilities, keep in mind that about 80% of the study abroad programs offered by the IEC are conducted in English. Likewise, many intensive language programs require little-to-no prior language training.
Time
Although studying abroad for a semester or longer will provide more course options, students participating in the BCC faculty led programs are often offered more unique programs and destinations. For those utilizing financial aid opportunities, keep in mind that additional assistance may be more challenging with summer programs.
Travel
If you are interested in traveling during your studies, be sure to keep in mind the feasibility of travel in surrounding regions as well as transportation within the city. If the nearest major airport or bus station is a few hours away, you may find yourself limited in where you can go and what you can see. Non-traditional destinations may be cheaper in general for traveling, but more popular areas often offer travel deals and offers.
Cost
Be sure to consider all the costs of the program. Some of the programs include housing and meals, others do not. The cost of living also varies from country to country. Basic personal expenses in Switzerland or Australia will most likely be higher than what pay in Ecuador or Costa Rica. The exchange rate can also impact program costs if the value of the dollar is low—even if the cost of living appears comparable. Climate/Geography
If you hate rain and love snow, Costa Rica during July may not be your best option. Climate and geography should not be the sole determinant in selecting a program, but if you have physical limitations or personal preferences it is something to consider. Do not be intimidated by varying temperatures or a little extra walking, but be aware so you can plan accordingly to fit your needs.
Personal Preferences
As always, personal preferences need to be addressed. If you are looking to avoid the American crowds, hotspot destinations generally have a higher population of travelers. If you’re looking to get your feet wet before dedicating a semester to studying abroad, BCC faculty-led programs are a great option. Other issues to consider are orientation programs, onsite international student assistance, religious trends, views towards woman, health concerns, safety issues.
