Jim Morris: The Rookie
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
12:00 noon in the Warner Student Life Center, Navesink Rooms
Jim "The Rookie" Morris' inspirational and motivational message about following through on your dreams and promises to others connects with all audiences, young and old, male and female.
His life story is also the inspiration behind the Walt Disney blockbuster film, "The Rookie," starring Dennis Quaid. This family film won the ESPY for best sports film of the year and was recently recognized by Sports Illustrated as one of the 50 best sports films of all-time.
Jim's childhood dream of becoming a major league baseball player was derailed by injuries and, admittedly, a lack of maturity. Eleven years after his retirement from baseball, Jim's dream was re-ignited by his then rag-tag high school team, when he was trying to inspire them to follow their dreams. They made each other the following bet: If they won a District Championship, Jim would have to try out for a major league team.
In case you didn't see the movie, Jim's team won the District Championship and Jim followed through on his promise, going to a tryout where he threw 12 consecutive pitches at 98 mph! Three months later in front of family and his high school team, Jim achieved his dream of pitching in the big leagues by striking out all-star Royce Clayton with a 98 mph fastball!
Mr. Morris’ universal message about following your dreams and keeping your promises is told through humorous stories which will inspire and motivate participants never give up on their dreams.

Thursday, October 8, 2009
6:00pm in the Warner Student Life Center, Navesink Rooms
Over the course of 10 years Dustin Lance Black has meteorically evolved into one of the most unique and critically acclaimed of all Hollywood screenwriters. The product of a conservative Mormon household in California, Black attended UCLA's school of theater, film, and television, graduating with honors in 1996. He remained aware of his own homosexuality from an early age, and thus felt a strong desire to explore gay issues (particularly gay rights) dramatically through his artistic craftsmanship.
Black moved into writing and directing in 2000 helming and scripting the gentle and thoughtful gay coming-of-age feature Journey of Jared Price in 2000. A series of offbeat documentaries followed that Black scripted, directed, and shot, 2001’s On the Busand2003’s My Life With Count Dracula. Black's recognition increased considerably with two achievements: he scripted numerous episodes of the quirky HBO ensemble drama Big Loveand scripted the A-list feature Milk, a biopic of slain gay rights crusader Harvey Milk, directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Sean Penn in the title role. The film received numerous Oscar nominations and won Black an award for Best Original Screenplay.
