The Student Volunteer Service Center connects Brookdale Community College students to opportunities to serve the Monmouth County community. Stop by our office located in room 101 of the Warner Student Life Center to find out more about club and organization events, on-going projects at area sites, as well as about large scale service projects planned for the Lincroft campus as well as our regional locations.

Large Scale Projects

Through out the year Student Life and Activities sponsors large scale projects in which the college community is invited to participate. Examples from the 2009-2010 school year include the Harvest Festival for the Homeless in October at the Northern Monmouth HEC featuring support from Farmers Against Hunger, theNovember Annual Food Drive for the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in Neptune which gathered over 1400 lbs of food, the Point in Time Homeless Count sponsored by Monmouth County Health and Human Services in January in Freehold and Asbury Park, and the Garden Clean Up at The Center in Asbury Park which provides housing and support for those living with HIV and AIDs in our community. Brookdale students and administrators worked together to make a difference in our community.

Here are some photos from some of our past events.

If you have an idea for a service project that supports those in need in Monmouth County that you think Student Life and Activities should host please email cjeune@brookdalecc.edu or stop by the SL&A Office in SLC 101.

Clubs & Organizations

All registered clubs and organizations must complete one service project per academic year to remain fully registered. Just a sample of some of the service projects completed recently by Brookdale student organizations include: Psi Beta, the Psychology Honors Society’s, Coat Drive for the National Alliance on Mental Illness; GEO, the Gender Equity Organization’s, fundraiser for 180 Turning Lives Around; EOFSA, the EOF Student Alliance, creating Easter Baskets for the Agape Children’s Center or the Theater Club holding a talent show to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDs.

If you are a member of a student organization and need assistance coordinating your volunteer event please meet with Christopher Jeune. He can register your event and find out how our office may assist you in planning and executing a successful service project. Service projects provide an opportunity for your club to do a low cost event that works with your group’s mission and often provides an opportunity to network with others with-in the community.

Ava Pellicone Memorial Blood Drive (co-sponsored by Brookdale's Men Lacrosse)

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 - Warner Student Life Center, Twin Lights I & II - 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A memorial Blood Drive for Ava Pellicone, the daughter of Counseling's Gail Pellicone, who passed away shortly after being born from intestinal faliure.  Ava and her twin sister Mia (who is an energetic three year old) required numerous blood tranfusions after being born prematurely.  The blood for these tranfusions came from someone's generous donation, and now Gail and her family continue giving that gift to others.  If you cannot donate blood, volunteer time to help donors, or work to raise money for the Ava Pellicone Memorial Nursing Scholarship here at Brookdale.  To donate blood, stop by any time between 10 and 7:30.  To volunteer or for more information on donations, contact robert.pellicone@verizon.net.

American Cancer Society - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

Sunday, October 17, 2010 - Oceans & Arnold Avenues, Point Pleasant Beach

In 2009, nearly 700,000 walkers across the country joined the American Cancer Society in our united fight against breast cancer. Together, we raised $60 million through Making Strides events - and we did it one donation at a time. More than a walk, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program describes the progress we’re making together to save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. You are helping us raise dollars and awareness that leads to this incredible progress; and we did it together, one walker at a time.

Join us in 2010 for the Point Pleasant Making Stides Against Breast Cancer Walk on October 17th.  For more info on starting a team, registering, or other information, please visit here, call 1-800-227-2345, e-mail pointpleasant.strides@cancer.org, or stop by SLC 101.
