The English Department at Brookdale Community College is comprised of faculty, learning assistants and support staff. We are researchers, scholars, authors (poets, fiction and non-fiction), artists, and students connected by our shared interest in language, literature, teaching and learning.
Teaching is the focus for our professional work. We participate in professional conferences and organizations, pursue advanced degrees, present at professional conferences, lead college committees, serve as advisors to student clubs and organizations, and write and publish everything from academic research to poetry and speculative fiction. We also develop curriculum and are technology integration and curriculum innovation leaders on our campus. We have high expectations of our students and ourselves and work diligently to support student growth and learning.
Technology innovation is evident in the work of our faculty. Developmental writing and college composition courses meet in our nationally recognized, teacher-designed computer classrooms. Advanced writing and literature courses use a range of multimedia instructional materials and databases. Most courses use our coursemanagement system (Angel) to support student learning and to support our student learning communities.
Our creative writing program provides workshops offered in mixed genre, fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, screenwriting, and has articulation agreements with other colleges The program also includes our Visiting Writers Series, a student Creative Writing Club, an award-winning student journal called Collage, and the Capstone bi-annual celebration and student reading.
Our literature program offers a range of 100-200 level courses for education and enjoyment, everything from Introduction to Literature
to Shakespeare.
