BROOKDALE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CAPTURE NAIL-BITING SEASON OPENER 61-62 AT HOME AGAINST DEL-TECH STANTON
Lincroft, NJ – Michelle Blum (Howell, NJ/Howell) made a jump shot with 17 seconds remaining to regain a back-and-forth lead for good, as the Brookdale Community College Jersey Blues (1-0) edged out Del Tech Stanton (DE) in the first home game of the year, 62-61.
Freshman Victoria DeTata (Middletown, NJ/Brick Township) made a diving steal in Del Tech’s territory with 12 seconds on the clock and feverishly passed to fellow classmate, Ria Zanectich (Long Branch, NJ/Point Pleasant). Zanectich then cashed in with one free-throw made after to put the Jersey Blues up by three. On Del-Tech’s final possession, sophomore Dohnay Banice (Dover High School, DE) posted up a lay-up as time expired, but it wasn’t enough as the Jersey Blues came out victorious.
Blum led the Jersey Blue scorers with 14 points. DeTata and freshman Keriann Cassarello (Keansburg, NJ/Keansburg) scored 11 each and Tia Curtis (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) rounded out the offensive attack, coming off the bench with 10 points, eight of which came in the second half.
Banice was Del-Tech’s leading scorer with 24.
Next up, the Jersey Blues will face Bergen in a Region XIX and Garden State Athletic Conference game at home on Saturday, November 24th. The game is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
