BROOKDALE’S JOE PARELLA NAMED TO THE NJCAA ALL-AMERICAN TEAM
Men’s Soccer All-Time Leading Scorer Receives Second All-American Honor

Lincroft, NJ – Brookdale Community College’s Joe Parella (Howell, NJ/Howell) claimed a spot on the 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American team, as selected by the NJCAA Division I and Division III men’s soccer committees. The sophomore forward earned his second first-team nod in as many years.

Parella, who was named to the NJCAA Player of the Week on October 28, claimed the top spot in Brookdale’s record books this year for goals, overcoming Mike Lonigro’s tally of 43.  With 45 goals scored in his tenure at Brookdale, the Howell-product broke a 22-year record, as Lonigro set the previous mark during the 1986 and 1987 seasons.

This season, Parella paced the Jersey Blues this season in goals scored (23) and points (50).

The Brookdale men’s soccer team finished its 2009 campaign with an overall record of 15-2-3.  After advancing to the Region XIX quarterfinals by defeating Middlesex 4-3 in penalty kicks, the Jersey Blues were upset by eventual National champion Union Community College, 4-1.

CONGRATULATIONS
to JOE PARELLA of the Men's Soccer Team
for being recognized as the NJCAA Player of the Week (Oct. 28, 2009).

Parella’s hat trick in the 5-1 victory over Raritan Valley placed him atop Brookdale’s annals for career goals scored (44). He broke Mike Lonigro's previous record of 43, which was set during the 1986 and 1987 seasons, to become the Jersey Blue’s all-time leading scorer. Later in the week Parella found the back of the net to put the Jersey Blues up 3-1 over Middlesex in a Region XIX Tournament elimination game.  After Middlesex tied the game at 3-3 and neither team was able to score in 20 minutes of overtime, Parella came through in the clutch – scoring a penalty kick in the third position – to help the Jersey Blues continue in the postseason.  He also recorded an assist in that game.  Parella now has 23 goals on the season and 45 for his career.
