Certificate In Judicial And Medical Interpreting-English/Spanish (Offered Fall 2012)

Certificate In Community Interpreting-Generic

The need for qualified interpreters is expected to grow much faster than average, according to the Federal government’s Occupational Outlook Handbook. Two certificate programs in interpreting are offered at Brookdale:

  • Certificate In Judicial And Medical Interpreting-English/Spanish, 88 hours of training, $1,999 (plus texts and tape/CD player with recording capacity and earphones) (Offered Fall 2012 to Spring 2013)
  • Certificate In Community Interpreting-Generic*-48 hours of training, $1,199 (plus text and tape/CD player with recording capacity and earphones)

*Generic means that it is open to individuals who are bilingual in English and another language

Designed to train interpreters for service and employment opportunities, Brookdale Community College’s interpreting certificate programs incorporate real-life samples of materials and situations.

The programs include training in consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting and sight translation used in medical, legal, education and social service settings.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

CERTIFICATE IN JUDICIAL AND MEDICAL INTERPRETING-ENGLISH/SPANISH, XPRAG 085W

PREREQUISITES:

  • Attend the four-hour information session. Fee and Code: $49, XPRAG 031W
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish

Program includes two levels of training with 88 hours of instruction in the following sequence of courses:

Level One: (Classes are taken concurrently)

  • Consecutive Interpreting-Generic, 28 hours
  • Simultaneous Interpreting and Sight Translation-Generic, 20 hours

Level Two:

  • Judicial Interpreting- English/Spanish, 20 hours
  • Medical interpreting-English/Spanish, 20 hours

ATTAINING THE CERTIFICATE: Students must pass with a score a minimum of 70% two instructor-developed preparatory exams. (One retest is permitted for a fee of $50). The exams are designed to assess the students’ preparedness to take: 1) the New Jersey qualifying exam to become a court interpreter and 2) the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) interpreter certification exam.

NOTE: Students do not receive certification from the NJ judiciary or the IMIA. Also, students must complete and document 12 hours of observation in a judicial and/or medical setting AFTER completing one Level Two class.

CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNITY INTERPRETING-GENERIC, XPRAG 086W

The Certificate in Community Interpreting-Generic is for individuals who are bilingual in English and any other language. Students complete the two Level One courses:

  • Consecutive Interpreting-Generic
  • Simultaneous Interpreting/Sight Translation-Generic

It comprises 48 hours of training and is designed for individuals who wish to work in entry level positions requiring bilingual proficiency such as intake workers for a court, in social services, in a medical setting or in education. A Certificate of Attendance is awarded with 80 percent attendance.

PREREQUISITE

Information Session—Introduction To Interpreting

To discover which program is right for you—either the Judicial And Medical Interpreting- Enghish/Spanish (offered Fall 2012) or Community Interpreting-Generic—attend the four-hour Information Session, Introduction to Interpreting.  At the information session, get all of the details about Brookdale’s interpreting certificate programs. Attendance at the information session is a prerequisite for registering for either program. Explore career opportunities using your knowledge and mastery of a second language and learn about the role of the interpreter and the three different modes of interpreting: consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting and sight translation. Find out what it takes to become a freelance or full time staff court interpreter, medical interpreter, and/or interpreter in the education and social service fields. Instructor may need to assess some students' bilingual abilities with follow-up phone evaluations and in some cases may require additional training prior to admittance to the program. 2 SESSIONS

LEVEL ONE

Consecutive Interpreting-Generic (28 hours)

Consecutive interpreting begins only after the speaker has verbalized a group of words or sentences. Learn the techniques of consecutive interpreting from interpreters who work in the social services, legal and medical fields. Each instructor will concentrate on his or her field of expertise, incorporating technical vocabulary and materials. 14 SESSIONS

Simultaneous Interpreting/Sight Translation-Generic (20 hours)

Simultaneous interpreting requires interpreters to listen and speak at the same time that someone else is speaking. Learn a variety of simultaneous interpreting techniques and skills, such as shadowing, paraphrasing, decalage and dual task training. Improve your reading comprehension, delivery and pacing in sight translation, which is an oral translation of written text.

LEVEL TWO

Medical Interpreting-English/Spanish (20 hours)

Rejane Franco, instructor

Medical interpreters help patients communicate with doctors, nurses and other medical staff. Emphasis is on technique as well as medical terminology. Presents training for individuals who are interested in interpreting in hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices.

Judicial Interpreting-English/Spanish (20 hours)

Henry Rugeles, instructor

Court interpreters work in a variety of legal settings, such as attorney-client meetings, preliminary hearings, arraignments, depositions and trials. Emphasis is on technique as well as legal terminology. Presents training for individuals who wish to take the NJ A.O.C Exam for Court Interpreters.
