2009 Softball Recap

After a rocky start, the Brookdale women’s softball team turned to teamwork and perseverance to string together an unprecedented run to bring home their 14^th Region XIX title to Lincroft. The Jersey Blues started out the season 5-4 on their southern trip to Myrtle Beach, and then split their first four Region XIX contests to start off the 2009 season at 12-10. The team then went on to win an exceptional 19 of 20 games including 12 Region XIX and GSAC contests.  The run helped the Jersey Blues clinch both the GSAC title and the top seed in the Region XIX Tournament.

 

After a first round bye, Brookdale opened up the Region XIX finals with back-to-back wins over Cumberland (17-6) and Gloucester (7-6). Even Mother Nature’s scorn couldn’t stop the Jersey Blues, as they fought through three days of rain to clinch their 14th Region XIX title with a 6-2 victory over Northampton in the championship game.

 

Sophomore Samantha Wagner was named MVP of the Region XIX Tournament. She put in a exceptional performance, batting 7-for-11 over the course of the tournament, including a solo home run in the championship game.

 

The Region XIX title catapulted the Jersey Blues into the National tournament where they won their opening game with a 10-0 shut-out of Suffolk-Seldin. Brookdale then lost the next contest to the eventual National champion, Tompkins Cortland CC, 14-9.

 

Despite losing three of four in the National tournament, many of the women, led by catcher Danielle Davenport, were honored for their accomplishments during the stellar season.

 

Davenport was named the Region XIX Player of the Year and the NFCA Catcher of the Year in Junior College Division III softball.  The second team All-American also earned spots on the first-team All-Region XIX and All-GSAC teams.  Joining Davenport on the Region XIX and GSAC first team were fellow sophomores Brianne Faynor and Stephanie Horn, and also freshman Samantha Deixler. Deixler also made the All-Tournament Team at Nationals as a DP after going 8-for-13 with 6 RBI. Additionally, Lexie DeRasmo received a nod of the second All-Region XIX team.
