Brookdale Women Suffer Heartbreaking First Defeat
The Brookdale Community College women’s team was held to its lowest scoring output of the year, as it suffered its first defeat, a 59-41 upset by Madison Area Technical College in the second-round of the NJCAA Division III National Tournament.
The first half saw 10 lead changes and five deadlocked scores, but it was the third-seed Madison Tech who was able to outlast the Jersey Blues in the second stanza, as the Wisconsin-based squad held the Blues scoreless over a period of nearly seven minutes in the final 20 minutes.
Michelle Blum (Howell, NJ/Howell) led the Jersey Blues in scoring, by posting 13 points. An unrelenting Madison defense held Brookdale power-scorers Tia Curtis (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional), Brielle Martinez (Manasquan, NJ/Hamilton West) and Vicky DeTata (Brick, NJ/Brick), who were previously averaging over 10 points per game each, to 12 points combined.
Brookdale, who is now 26-1, will contest its final game of the year in the consolation game, against Anoka Ramsey Community College, the four-seed from Minnesota. Anoka Ramsey (24-6) pummeled its opening-round opponent, Anne Arundel Community College (MD) 86-36, before losing to top-seeded Onandaga (NY), 76-58.
