Career Training Programs: Certified Nurse Aide In Long Term Care (CNA), Certified Homemaker/Home Health Aide (CHHA) & Patient Care Technician (PCT)


Prerequisites & Health Requirements

Q. I just had a physical and 2 part PPD for my job. Do I still need one?

A. This requirement must be within one year and the information must be transferred by physician or nurse practitioner onto our form.

Q.  Is QuantiFERON TB Gold an alternative to the PPD Skin Test?

A.  Yes, it is a blood test for the detection of immune responses to tuberculosis (TB). Many hospital and healthcare systems have adopted this test instead of the PPD Skin Test. Students may opt to have this blood test in place of the PPD two-step skin test.

Q. I can’t get the Mantoux Test done before class starts. Can I still register? 

A, Yes.  Students cannot start clinical until the two-step Mantoux is completed

Q. How do I obtain liability insurance?  It is required by clinical sites?

A. Information is provided in the information packet and students will go online to complete the process (payment, specialty, etc.). Cost approximately is $29 per year.

Q.  Where do I send my criminal background check? 

A. Information is provided in the packet. Students will go online to complete the process (payment, etc.). Only CNA students are required to mail the form in (address on back of form) and have no payment.

Q. Some courses require a High School Diploma or GED.  Do I need to bring this documentation to class, or have proof prior to registering for class?  

A. All students will need to declare on the registration form that they have a High School Diploma or GED and have a copy available upon request by an instructor or administrator.

Q. On the CNA forms it asks for College ID number. What do I place there?

A. Leave it blank.

Q. What do I bring to class on the first day?

 A. All the required paperwork and/or confirmation receipts.

Q. I had a criminal background check and fingerprints done before. Do I have to do it again?

A. Fingerprinting is not needed but Adam Safeguard CBC is only good for six months. Please bring current Adam Safeguard paperwork copy to class as proof.

Q. Do I have to obtain the urine drug screening test?

A. Yes, if listed as a prerequisite.

Q. Is the urine drug screen test included in the criminal background base price?

A. No, there is an additional fee, approximately $60.

Q. I already work for a medical facility; do I still need the urine drug screen test?

A. Yes, if there is clinical requirement in another facility.

Q. I am a student funded through unemployment; do I still have to pay for the prerequisites?

A. Call Dolores Engel at 732-224-2302 for how reimbursement or payment is made on each requirement.

Q. I already took a college math class; do I still have to take the Applied Math course requirement?

A. The math class must be a college level course.

Q. What status option should I choose for the liability Insurance?

A. Always select “student”. However, if you hold a professional license, you may also add an additional option. For example, “Student , RN”.

Q. Can I use another service for the Criminal Background, Urine Drug Screen and fingerprinting?

A. No, we contract with Adam Safeguard at the request of our clinical affiliations.  

Textbook & Supplies

Q. I am enrolled in the Healthcare CPR class. Do I really need to buy the book?

A. Yes.

Q. What is in my tote?  Do I have to purchase it if I already have the items contained in that tote?

A. Yes.  Each tote is specific to the program and supplies cannot be brought from home for infection control purposes.

Q. Which tunic (uniform) do I buy?

A. Do not buy in advance. Instructor will advise.

Q. Do I need the uniform for class too? 

A.  Appropriate street clothes are allowed.

Q. The textbook in the College Book Store is a newer edition than the one on the book list. Which one should I buy? 

A. Always buy the updated version.

Q. If English is not my best language, will I be able to enroll in a Healthcare Training course?

A.  We require students to be at the intermediate level in order to be successful at the community college level. If you are unsure of your status, please complete a form you can obtain by calling 732-224-2315 and be evaluated (for free) in the Testing Center to determine your readiness to enroll. No appointment is necessary but check hours of operation.

Q. Can I use my Pell Grant to pay for this program?

A. No. We have a payment plan option for courses over $500. Please contact Dolores Engels at 732-224-2302 for information.

Q. I am unemployed/low income, etc.; where else can I look for financial assistance?

A. There may be resources available through the One-Stop Career Service Center at 732-224-1857.

Q.  What is the job outlook for Healthcare?

A. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook provides career and occupational information including required education, training and necessary skills, as well as job forecasts for the future. Visit www.bls.gov/oco.

Q. Our company would like to recruit your students. Can we visit one of your classes?

A. No. We cannot set aside class time or break time for recruitment. However, you can send printed information to the Program Administrator, Janet Spetko, at Brookdale Community College, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738. We will make it available to students. 

Q. Do you sponsor externships for program graduates?

A. No, unless that provision is part of a grant funded program. We will, however, provide job search assistance. Contact: Dee Dee Pitts at 732-224-2816, for this service.

Q. What is difference between CNA, CHHA and PCT? Where can I work once I finish each program?  

A. CNA is a certified nursing assistant that works in a nursing home providing bedside care to a group of patients.

CHHA is a certified home health aide that works individually in a private home, assisting with care and personal needs of homebound patients.

PCT is a patient care technician or assistant that works in a hospital alongside the registered nurse providing care, drawing blood work and performing EKGs.

Q. How many weeks is CNA program?

A.  It is 96 hours, usually scheduled in a six week time frame.

Q. Patient Care Technician is not listed for the Liability Insurance; what is my primary area of study?

A. Use Medical Technician/Technologist Assistant.

Q. I am already a CNA. How do I add a CHHA certification? A. This certification following CNA certification, requires an additional 10 hours of training in CHHA but is not offered at Brookdale. Check with local home health agencies for this additional training. Career Training: Fitness Programs Q. What types of Fitness Programs do you offer?  A. We have two certification programs: Personal Trainer (training individuals one-on one) and the Group fitness Training program for individuals who want to train groups (aerobic, yoga, Pilates, etc.). Both programs include the certification fee in the tuition and the exam is given on the last day of the program. Career Training Program: Medical Coding Specialist Program This new program is a fast track, comprehensive training program. The program is hybrid and combines classroom instruction, Virtual AHIMA Lab, the 3M Encoder and online homework assignments. The program includes both the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Coding Apprentice (CCA) exam prep. In addition, the billing component follows the coding content as an optional course. All instructors are certified and working in the field of medical coding and billing. Q. Is this program the same as the Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) Certificate Program offered as a credit program? A. No, our program does not require admission to the college and is focused on ICD-9/10 and CPT coding and billing for hospitals and medical practices. For information on the HIT credit certificate program, please call Diana Skarbek at 732-224-1887.       Career Training Program: Medical Assistant Q. Can I challenge part or the entire Medical Assistant program to obtain a certificate of completion? A.  No. Entry level training courses are not set up to challenge. They presume no Healthcare background. Q. Is this a certification program? No. Certification is not required in NJ in order to work in the field.  Career Training Program: Phlebotomy Q. There is a lab near me, but it is not on the list; can I arrange to do my clinical at the lab? A. No, all clinical agencies need contracts in place with Brookdale. Career Training: Veterinary Technician Assistant Q. I already have experience and training in the field; can I take the NAVTA exam for certification? A. Not at this time. Contact NAVTA for evaluation of past experience and/or training. Miscellaneous Q. When will the next Healthcare Training brochure be available? A. Brochures for upcoming semesters becomes available online in June and November. Q. If I misplaced or lost my certificate, who should I contact? A. Call 732-224-2380.  The replacement fee is $15. Your name, program, and dates of attendance is required
