History
Psi Beta, the national honor society in Psychology for community and junior colleges, was founded in 1981 to recognize the scholastic achievements and interests in psychology of two-year students.
Brookdale`s Psi Beta Chapter was officially chartered on April 8, 2002. On that day, 26 students, 1 alumnus, and 7 faculty members were inducted as founding members.
Mission
The mission of Psi Beta is the professional development of psychology students through promotion and recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership, research, and community service.
Membership Requirements
To become a member of Brookdale`s chapter of Psi Beta you must fullfil the following requirements:
* Be enrolled at Brookdale and have earned a CGPA of at least 3.16, including all transfer credits, or a ranking in the top 35% of enrollment, whichever is higher, by the date of induction.
* Have earned no less than a "B" in psychology courses, beginning with introductory psychology.
* Have completed at least one introductory psychology course and 12 semester hours total college credit.
* Have demonstrated a genuine interest in psychology and high standards of personal behavior and integrity.
* Have been approved by the chapter and paid the once-in-a-lifetime national registration fee.
Induction Requirements
You must have active status, or have attended at least three chapter activities.
How to Get Started
Contact any officer, or join us at one of our regularly scheduled meetings. You will be asked to do three things:
* Fill out a registration card.
* Supply a transcript to the advisor. (A student copy is fine.)
* Make out a check for $55 (a one time fee -make sure the check also has your Brookdale ID number).
Membership Benefits
Psi Beta provides a means of national recognition by providing:
* awareness of the honor by Psi Chi, the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Psychological Society (APS), and psychology departments at colleges and universities
* verification of membership for references throughout member`s lifetime
* eligibility for national research awards (Allyn & Bacon)
* publication of membership and activities in the national Psi Beta Newsletter.
Through chapter activities you will also:
* acquire leadership skills
* interact with faculty outside the classroom
* learn more about the professional and educational choices available
* meet outstanding professionals in psychology
* participate in community service
* meet peers with similar interests
* receive newsletters through the chapter while active.
Psi Beta offers the opportunity to participate in national, regional, and local psychological association programs, including paper and poster presentations.
Psi Beta student members are eligible for student affiliate membership in the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Psychological Society (APS).
