2007: A Mid-Season Look at the Jersey Blues Women's Tennis Team
(10/3/2007)
This year looks to be a complete turnaround from last season for the Brookdale Women’s Tennis team. There are three returnees from last year, as well as three key newcomers.
Number one singles is being filled by Robin Morris, a sophomore from Manasquan. Robin is an all around complete player who has the second best record for Region XIX. Her wins come against Ocean as well as Cecil County College, a division I school from Maryland.
At second singles, Dominique Califano, a sophomore from Red Bank Catholic, is currently undefeated in Region XIX play. Her only loss comes from Cecil County College. Dominique was the second singles champion at the Harford County Invitational Tournament where she never dropped more than three games in a match.
Jessica Reiff, a freshman from Ocean Township, is playing third singles and is currently undefeated as well. Jessica is also the champion of the Harford tournament at her flight.
Rounding out the lineup are the returning players from last season. Devin Gates from Rumson-Fair Haven is playing fourth singles for the Jersey Blues and is 1-2 in Region XIX match play.
At fifth singles is Victoria Johnson from Middletown. Victoria is playing very well and a key win for the team came against Gloucester County College who just returned from placing fourth in the country at the national tournament held in May in Tucson, Arizona.
Christina Urban, also from Red Bank Catholic, is playing sixth singles and has contributed to the team with important wins against Gloucester County College as well as Mercer County Community College.
The doubles teams have been unstoppable. With Robin Morris and Jessica Reiff playing number one, they are 2-1 in Region XIX play and have also beaten Cecil County College. They look to be the Region XIX champions. At second doubles, the team of Devin Gates and Dominique Califano just returned with a championship win at the Harford Invitational. The third doubles team which is made up of Vicky Johnson and Christina Urban are 2-1 in the Region securing wins against Gloucester and Mercer.
The Jersey Blues just returned with a first place finish at the fifth annual Harford Invitational Tournament which was held in Harford, Maryland. They placed first out of ten teams which included programs such as the Fashion Institute of Technology from New York, County College of Rhode Island as well as Division I schools from Hagerstown, Maryland and Cecil, Maryland. Five of the ten teams had competed in their respective national tournaments last year. This was a tremendous accomplishment for the program. They now set their goals on the rest of the season and looking to win the Region XIX Tournament, which is held at Brookdale this year, and then moving on to the national tournament which will be held in May of 2008 in Tucson, Arizona.
