Math for Meds

Math for Meds - Nursing Department
  • Nurses need to be able to adequately and safely calculate and administer medications and IV fluids for their patients.  In the first nursing course, you will learn to do these calculations and take a Math for Meds exam.  You will have three opportunities to pass the exam in order to continue in the course.  Your entrance exam validated that you possess the aptitude for success in the Math for Meds segment of the first nursing course.  However, many students suffer from math anxiety and find that this detracts from their ability to be successful on the exam.  While most students are successful on one of the three attempts at the exam, those who need to take it more than once find their anxiety and preoccupation with studying for the math exam prevents them from being successful with the theory portion of the course.  While they may pass the math test, they ultimately do not pass the course.  Some preparation will reduce the risk of this happening to you.  By student request, we are providing you with these strategies to enhance success.
Strategies for success:
    • When you have registered for NURS 160,click on the Math Tutorial button on the Nursing Department's Home page and take the Math for Meds tutorial, designed specifically for incoming students by Linda Hoffman, Associate Professor in NURS 161.  This tutorial has all the information that you need to be successful on Math for Meds.

    • Purchase the Kee and Hayes Study Guide (available in the Brookdale bookstore, see required reading list orientation letter), and complete the Appendix A math review in the back of the book.  This will help you to identify any problem areas.  You can then use the appropriate area of the book to help remediate yourself.

    • Look for information about upcoming workshops. These workshops can be attended  prior to beginning the program to improve chances for success.
  • Take the Math for Meds tutorial
