COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a rigorous introduction to computer science and computer applications. This course emphasizes common computer/technology skills and helps students access, process and present information. This course contains a component that helps the student to recognize, analyze and assess ethical issues and situations in computer science.
PREREQUISITES: None, but READ-095 is recommended.

Storage: A portable secondary storage media (i.e., USB Flash Drive)
Software: Windows, Internet Explorer 7,8, or 9, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access 2010, myitlab (Available for use at Computer Science open lab LAH 103)

ADDITIONAL TIME REQUIREMENTS: The student should expect to spend at least 2 hours of time outside class for each hour in class. The Computer Science open lab LAH 103 at Lincroft is open Mon.-Sat. during the 15 week semesters. Hours are posted on the outside door and on the Computer Science Website.
INTENDED COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The student will:
· Gain an understanding of computer concepts, ethics and terminology
· Acquire the ability to use a microcomputer to effectively process and present information
· Develop effective search strategies and evaluate information from web sites

DEPARTMENT POLICIES:
Testing: Tests cannot be retaken. If a student has a valid excused absence on the day of a test, it may be taken with the permission of the instructor within 10 days of the original test administration date. A valid Brookdale ID and test pass may be required to take the test. Only one test may be missed. Any other missed tests will be issued a score of zero.
Late assignments: Points will be deducted for late assignments.
Attendance: Attendance is required every week in class. More than three inexcusable absences will result in a failing grade.
Addendums: Individual instructors may add additional requirements to this syllabus in written form (such as assignment due dates, cover sheets, class behavior, etc)

ACADEMIC VIOLATION: The instructor of the course has the authority to give a course grade of F if the student submits the work of another person in a manner that represents the work as one’s own, or knowingly permits one’s work to be submitted by another person without the instructor’s authorization. Students must use their own files and type in their own work. All computer work must be on your own portable storage device and available for instructor review. Our software is checking for violations.
