COURSE DESCRIPTION:   This course is a rigorous introduction to computer science and computer applications. This course emphasizes common computer/technology skills and helps students access, process and present information. This course contains a component that helps the student to recognize analyze and assess ethical issues and situations in computer science.
 
PREREQUISITES: None, but READ-095 is recommended.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

2) Technology in Action (Evans) Fifth Edition                       Custom Edition            Pearson- Prentice Hall
3) myitlab Software Access Code – Software can be downloaded from www.myitlab.com
4) Microsoft Office 2007 180 days trial
Storage: A portable secondary storage media (i.e., USB Flash Drive)
Software: Office 2007, Internet Explorer, myitlab (Available for use at Computer Science open lab LAH 103)
RAM: 512 MB Required
 
ADDITIONAL TIME REQUIREMENTS:The student should expect to spend at least 2 hours of time outside class for each hour in class. The Computer Science open lab LAH 103 at Lincroft is open Mon.-Sat. Hours are posted on the outside door and on the Computer Science Website. If the student wishes to work at home, they will need to have Microsoft Office 2007 with Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint, myitlab and Internet Explorer installed on their system. Distance Education students must attend a mandatory orientation session.
 
INTENDED COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
The student will:
·         Gain an understanding of computer concepts, ethics and terminology
·         Acquire the ability to use a microcomputer to effectively process and present information
·         Develop effective search strategies and evaluate information from web sites
(Core Competencies: Technological Literacy, Information Literacy and Ethical Dimension)

DEPARTMENT POLICIES:
Testing: Test cannot be retaken. If a student has a valid excused absence on the day of a test, it may be taken with the permission of the instructor within 10 days. A valid Brookdale ID and test pass is required to take the test. Only one test may be missed. Any other missed tests will be issued a score of zero.
Late assignments: Points will be deducted for late assignments. No more than a total of 3 assignments may be submitted during the last 2 weeks of a 15 week semester.
Attendance: Attendance is required every week in lab and lecture. More than three inexcusable absences will result in a failing grade.
Addendums: Individual instructors may add additional requirements to this syllabus in written form (such as assignment due dates, cover sheets, class behavior, etc.). Online or hybrid courses may use a different syllabus.

HW 1 – ETHICS TOPIC RESEARCH (10 pts.)

Professors are using an Internet online service called Turnitin.com to help detect plagiarized papers. Go to turnitin.com and type a 1 paragraph summary in your own words using Microsoft Word about how this service is used. Search for 2 other websites on plagiarism and type 2 paragraphs in your own words summarizing your findings. Include the 2 Web Addresses in your document. Save, print and submit your paper to your instructor.
 
ETHICS TERM PAPER (60 Pts.)
This paper must be prepared using Microsoft Word and submitted by the 9th week of the 15-week semester. You will select your topic from the Ethics in Computing Topics Table on page 146 in your “Technology in Action” according to the following grid:
