Debbie Almeida started at Brookdale in 2002 and has worked in the Finance Department since 2003. Debbie lives in Farmingdale, N.J.  She is the mother of two sons and a grandmother of two girls, ages 2 and 12.

How long have you worked at Brookdale and in what capacities?

I began working at Brookdale in September 2002 as an hourly office assistant.  I worked in several departments but primarily in counseling.  In July 2003, I was hired as a Senior Assistant – Accounts Payable and in  September 2004 as Interim Coordinator – Accounts Payable. In March 2005, I began in my current role, Manager, Accounts Payable and Special Projects.

What are some of the things you enjoy most about Brookdale?

I love the atmosphere and the people.  The employees and students are friendly and just fun to be around. I have developed a lot of strong relationships here, and most employees go above and beyond to support the college. The campus is beautiful.

Can you give an overview of your work and department?

The Accounts Payable Department processes all non-payroll related documents.  I monitor, approve and bill Chapter 12 (county and state program for capital projects construction and renovation) and the Higher Education Equipment Leasing Fund projects (for classroom technology). I prepare spreadsheets and fixed asset reports for year-end close, documents requested by our external auditors, prepare and reconcile enrollment reports for Finance and special projects assigned by the Interim Executive Director of Finance and Information Technologies, among other responsibilities.

How has Brookdale impacted your life?

Brookdale has shown me kindness. Employees are not only kind to one another but to students and those in need outside of our immediate community. I remember Super Storm Sandy. There was no electricity. I volunteered to come on campus and hand out payroll checks because I knew that people would need their money in such a difficult time. The employees were so appreciative and thankful. I consider myself so lucky to have met so many people who really care about others.

What are some of the activities you’ve been involved with at Brookdale?

I first became connected to Brookdale when I got involved in Governance about 10 years ago. I was Chair and Vice Chair of the Professional Development Committee and in 2013 became Governance Chair.  Right now, I am a member of the College Life Committee and the Administrators Professional Development Sub Committee. I participated in the Middle States evaluation as a member of Standard Seven and am also a member of the Student Conduct Board. I volunteer to assist with Brookdale Foundation, Athletics and College events such as graduation and orientation. I am involved in Brookdale’s Volunteer Connection, Helping Hands and the Giving Tree, among other projects.

What are some of the things you’ve learned through getting involved in these activities and projects?

Everyone should volunteer and get involved!  I am somewhat of a shy person. Stepping out of my comfort zone was not easy in the beginning.  Volunteer work helped broaden my overall understanding of the College.  I love to volunteer because it makes me feel good, especially when it involves supporting students.  Volunteering has led me to new friends, new experiences and a new appreciation for the College’s mission.

What are some things you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I like to travel and go to the beach.  I enjoy reading and just hanging with friends.  I like to shop at small businesses and enjoy attending craft shows.
