I had worked for the government for several years and then moved into real estate, first selling and then managing home sales for a major relocation corporation. During that time I managed large corporate budgets. Ironically the company relocated! I began working at a major telecommunications company as a project manager for their Finance and Business Case curriculum. After several years of managing and teaching for corporations, I moved into academia here at Brookdale Community College.
Describe one or more of your biggest achievements as a Brookdale faculty member:
I have been on many committees and participated in many activities at Brookdale. I received the Outstanding Colleague Award for the academic year 2001-2002, and I have served on Governance committees since joining the college. I ultimately became Chair of College Governance in 2009-2010, and I have also served as co-advisor to the Black Student Union and to ALPFA, Brookdale’s student business club. I was also the co-advisor of the Run Your Own Business Camp, in which young entrepreneurs ran a business on campus and made money!
Do you work outside of the college?
I have published magazine articles on personal finance and money management, and I also teach personal finance and money management for private interest groups. This is not work; I volunteer my time. As a result I have received awards from the variety of groups in which I am involved. I am also a member and treasurer of the Business Professional Women of Lincroft. We raised scholarship money for Brookdale students and would award three $1,000 scholarships each year.
What would you say is your most memorable moment – or moments – as a member of the Brookdale community?
I am most proud of my intern student who has also been in several of my classes, was portrayed on one of Brookdale’s bus advertisements and now works on Fashion Avenue in NY; my student who graduated and has moved up several positions for a major telecommunications company; my student who gave me and my colleagues a “shout out” in his Brookdale graduation commencement speech; my student liaison on Governance who is now finishing medical school; my struggling student in class who “got it”; and many more. My biggest accomplishments are making a difference in the lives of my students, and seeing them become innovative, productive and contributing citizens.
Would you recommend that students take a class in your department?
I believe every individual should take classes in business. No matter what you choose to do in life, having an understanding in business is important. The faculty in the Business department are educators with a great deal of experience. Not only do we teach, we care, as do all Brookdalians. Students who come to Brookdale with the desire to learn, who connect with their professors, who become involved in various activities at the college, and interact with their fellow students are destined to be successful!
