What brought you to Brookdale?
Brookdale was a place that fit my interests in teaching, as well as allowed me to continue my research.
Describe one or more of your biggest achievements as a Brookdale faculty member:
I organized a conference on instructors’ race and its impact on classroom dynamics; I worked with students to develop the UndocuAlly Club; I have contributed to a “teaching circles” conversation on pedagogy; and I have participated in campus discussions regarding issues pertaining to immigration.
Do you work outside of the college?
I continually conduct research in my field, which has led to publications in academic journals and in two books: Punjabi Immigrant Mobility in the United States, and Race and the Lifecourse, which was cowritten with another author.
What would you say is your most memorable moment – or moments – as a member of the Brookdale community?
I would have to say that it is organizing the conference on instructor race and classroom teaching/learning dynamics, and also working with two students in the Fall of 2016 who were struggling with personal troubles. Helping them succeed in my course was gratifying.
What do you think separates Brookdale from other colleges?
The faculty members in our department are knowledgeable, diligent and passionate about their work. Taking a course at our department would help students develop social awareness, critical thinking skills as well as their skills to write and communicate their ideas effectively.
