Email: hheinmets@brookdalecc.eduWhat brought you to Brookdale?
The excellent reputation of the nursing department, the ability to have flexible work hours with my family, the challenge of teaching and developing future nurses, and the dedicated and talented nursing faculty.

Describe one or more of your biggest achievements as a Brookdale faculty member:
I have served as co-advisor to the Brookdale Student Nurses’ Association, chair of the Institutional Planning and Effectiveness Committee and as a member of the Governance Steering Committee. I was a co-recipient of a Brookdale Innovation Grant, which focused on the retention of first semester nursing students, and I have presented at professional conferences and at Brookdale’s annual Scholar’s Day program.

Do you work outside of the college?
I have served as a per-diem staff nurse in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit at Riverview Medical Center and achieved a national certification in Post Anesthesia Care (CPAN). I am also certified in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Life Support. I have developed programming and curriculum for elementary-aged children at my church, where I also conduct numerous volunteer activities. I often work in the community as well.

What would you say is your most memorable moment – or moments – as a member of the Brookdale community?
I have been able to assist at-risk students in completing the nursing program, and then see them go on to have careers in nursing as respected professionals. I have also been able to witness the excitement and growth in confidence of student nurses as they volunteer in the community

What do you think separates Brookdale from other colleges?
It is absolutely, 100 percent the dedication and devotion of the staff and faculty.

Would you recommend that students take a class in your department?
I would recommend the Brookdale nursing program to anyone who is interested in nursing as a career choice. We have excellent faculty and administration, we are highly respected in the community, we are very affordable, and we have articulation agreements with area colleges so that students can go on an earn their BSN degree.
