Jonathan Scott encountered many changes and challenges on his Brookdale journey. While pursuing his degree full-time at 24, Scott also worked full-time as a bartender. He juggled the challenges of academics – classes, papers and exams – with long and often irregular hours at various establishments.
Brookdale Community College awarded degrees and certificates to 1,884 students in two graduation ceremonies at the college’s 49th annual commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 16. Brookdale also acknowledged seven outstanding student award winners and presented honorary degrees to two individuals and honored two more with Distinguished Alumni Awards.
“I felt like I had a good story to tell,” Kayla Breaud, student speaker at the morning commencement ceremony, said about why she applied to speak. Breaud, a Distinguished Scholar, graduated with a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the National Society of Leadership and Success. She earned her associate’s degree in psychology.
Brookdale Concordia Chorale’s Summer Tour Stops at China
Last summer, the Brookdale Concordia Chorale scored its first performance outside the United States, singing one service and evensong for an entire week at Exeter Cathedral in the United Kingdom. The group’s international tour continues this summer in China with performances in and around Shanghai after a Memorial Day performance at Carnegie Hall.
Brookdale students who are members of the Creative Writing Club (CWC) have attended the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) annual conference and book fair for several years with Suzanne Parker, associate professor in the English department and the Creative Writing Club advisor.

Elias Tovio-Petro, custodian at the Hazlet Higher Education Center (HEC) and Brookdale ESL student, became a United States citizen in April.
Then and Now
As the seasons change from fall to winter and now spring with summer on its way, students and members of the Brookdale community enjoy the warm weather and scenery along the many walkways at Brookdale’s Lincroft campus.

- Summer hours for members of the support staff and administration will go into effect on Saturday, June 1st, and will run through Thursday, August 15th, 2019. Normal workweek hours will be reduced from 37.5 to 35 for full-time employees. Part-time employee receive a prorated reduction in the workweek.
Softball Claims Third Place at Nationals
The Jersey Blues claimed third place at the NJCAA Division III softball national tournament after defeating Dakota College at Bottineau, 5-1, Lehigh Carbon Community College, 12-3, Onondaga Community College, 9-4 and falling to Herkimer College, 9-5 and Rock Valley College, 4-2.
Head Coach Johnny Johnson Tallies 700th Career Win
Brookdale’s head baseball coach Johnny Johnson captured his 700th career win as the Jersey Blues took down the Spartans of Northampton Community College, 11-0 in game two of the first round of the final four tournament in May.
