Phlebotomist in lab

A new noncredit program will launch this fall: the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate.

This 170-hour program, co-sponsored by Hackensack Meridian Health System, will qualify you to take the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy Board Certification exam.

As a phlebotomist, you will become skilled in various techniques of performing and obtaining blood sample procedures and specimen collection. You will gain a thorough knowledge of specimen collection and learn about all aspects of phlebotomy equipment and laboratory safety. You will receive an overview of anatomy and physiology, legal responsibilities, special procedures, healthcare delivery system, clinical laboratory services, and pre-analytical considerations for laboratory testing.

This phlebotomy course includes a lecture component, student laboratory practices, and clinical experience, to develop the appropriate competencies, professionalism, and communication and public relations skills.

The instructor is Nancy Jalowski, MA Ed, MT(ASCP) PBTCM.

Prerequisites:

English language proficiency
High school diploma or GED
Physical exam, documentation of immunization, 2-step PPD, Flu vaccine, and hepatitis B series
Criminal background check
Malpractice insurance

Class and Lab hours are Monday and Fridays, September 11 to October 13, from 9 AM-4 PM, at Brookdale’s Hazlet Center.

Clinical hours are Monday-Friday, October 16 to November 17, from 8 AM-12: PM at various sites to be announced.

Session day is Thursday, October 26, from 9 AM-3 PM at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

The fee is $1945.
