Free Innovative Pilot Program for Adult Students 18-24 with Developmental Disabilities

Brookdale Community College and Voyagers’ Community School are proud to announce a free, innovative, pre-vocational program that offers adult students, ages 18 to 24, with developmental disabilities a robust and well-balanced classroom learning experience in life skills, consumer skills, self-advocacy, healthy habits, understanding money, and the innovative uses of technology.

The 2023 spring community college-based program just completed 13 weeks. Participants were offered activities and experiences that strengthened students’ career skills, increased self-awareness, and increased understanding of practical steps in preparing for employment. The program, funded by a grant from the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education in New Jersey, is tuition free and will be offered again this summer from July 10 to August 17, Monday through Thursday, from 9 am to 3 pm.

Far from your ordinary summer program, the SAIL Into Summer program is limited to 20 participants, who will be selected through an application and interview process. Registration is accepted for a minimum of 2-weeks and a maximum of 6-weeks.

The summer curriculum highlights include social awareness sessions, covering people skills, social skills, character development, interpersonal skills, and vocational awareness and readiness.

Additionally, participants will engage in various activities, including STEAM design, podcasting, music projects, arts and crafts, gardening, landscaping, outdoor adventures, nature walks, games, therapy dog visits, and more.

The program also includes employment explorations, such as community service, career fairs, employer speaker series, and onsite employment visits.

Participants can enjoy various social events in the evenings, including dance parties, movie nights, carnivals, flashlight hide-and-seek, crafts, fireside chats, and s’mores.

If you are interested in the SAIL Into Summer program, whether as a participant or a professional representing a potential student, please feel free to get in touch by calling 732-842-1660 and filling out the inquiry form, or by sending an email to cposs@brookdalecc.edu.
