After the ships of European explorers Giovanni Verrazzano and Henry Hudson ventured along New Jersey’s coast, they were followed over the next 400 years by countless vessels with settlers, soldiers, fishermen, and cargo. An unknown number of these ships met their end on Jersey’s 130-mile-long shore. Storms, sandbars, accidents, or acts of violence created treacherous circumstances that claimed wrecks from Sandy Hook to Cape May.
