Justice In Mexico – A First Hand Account

February 8, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

Dr David Bassano, Brookdale history chair
In summer 2019, Professor Bassano traveled to the Mexican state of Chiapas with SiPaz, an international peace and justice NGO. He was permitted to visit a local prison in San Cristobal and interview prisoners. It was clear from their testimonies that, as various international bodies have reported, there are very serious problems within the justice system of Mexico, including bribery, false arrests, and worse. Learn about the details of his visit within the context of a wider analysis of the Mexican situation. Also find out about the Cereza Collective, a group focused on helping Mexican women re-integrate into society after being incarcerated.
