The Lives of NJ/NY’s Turtles and Other Species
Dr. Russell Burke, Professor of Biology, Hofstra University
Dr. Burke is interested in the ecology, evolution, and conservation biology of local turtles and lizards. His current research projects include studies of diamondback terrapins in Jamaica Bay, wood turtles in northern New Jersey, and wall lizards on Long Island. The terrapins face a number of conservation issues, including habitat decline. The wood turtles live in a relatively pristine habitat, while the wall lizards, introduced to the area by a pet shop in 1967, are an invasive species.
