Before audiences fell in love with Rudolph Valentino, there was Robert Mantell. A veteran theater actor, Mantell captivated crowds with an extensive Shakespearean repertoire and commanding presence on stage. He forayed briefly into silent films, but passed away before achieving the same fame he had in the theater. Mantell called Atlantic Highlands his summer home for more than 20 years and became a well-loved figure in the community. However, he is also just as well-known for his four high-profile marriages as he was for his acting. Two of which ended under tragic and mysterious circumstances. Historian Greg Caggiano traces the career of Robert Mantell as well as his many loves, life in the Atlantic Highlands, and what brought such a famous individual to the Jersey Shore.
Greg Caggiano is local historian who has been involved with the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society since 2013, serving on their Board of Directors for nine years. He lectures for Brookdale Community College and organizations across the state. As firm believer in volunteering and giving back to the community, he has helped to fundraise tens of thousands of dollars for historic preservation over the last decade.
