Voices Of Survivors: The Leslie Schwartz Story

Presented by Marc David Bonagura, Director of Brookdale’s Center for WW II Studies & Conflict Resolution

Professor Bonagura will present a lecture and discussion on the decade he spent working with Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor Leslie Schwartz regarding how Mr. Schwartz found his voice for writing and speaking about the trauma that he experienced as a child in Auschwitz and Dachau. As Schwartz realized the importance of his testimony and the possibilities for peace and healing he might inspire, his reputation spread around the world.

It all began when Schwartz gave a talk at Brookdale Community College and Professor Bonagura subsequently wrote a story about Schwartz in his blog. The next day Schwartz called Bonagura, and they became fast friends, speaking almost every day for more than ten years.

Once Leslie gained the confidence to speak about his ordeal, miraculous events became commonplace.  Two books, a documentary and a feature film, presentations before the United Nations on Conflict resolution, and even a meeting with then Chancellor Merkel followed. Additionally, Schwartz spoke at many colleges and universities in the United States and met with thousands of German students.

Schwartz’ story has been featured on NPR, ABC and FOX NewsThe New York TimesThe South Florida Sun SentinelSuddeutsche Zeitung, The Times of Israel, Bavarian Television and many other media outlets across the globe. Join us for a fascinating and inspiring talk!
