We are pleased to welcome you to the opening of our Fall, 2018, Juried Show featuring members of the Art Society of Monmouth County and our Visiting Artist Program, featuring Patricia Hutchinson of Belmar and Bill Ross of Point Pleasant. Thanks go out to the Monmouth County Arts Council for their generous funding of our Visiting Artists Program as well as to dozens of people from our community who contribute through The Brookdale Community College Foundation.

This exhibition has been installed with the help of Christina Berndt, CVA Gallery Docent, and three students enrolled in our Gallery Assistant Practicum: Exhibition & Docent Training class, Maryann Rojas, Lisa Wilkie, and Janet Smuga.

Docent Notes:

The subjects of Pat Hutchinson’s portraits gaze directly from their frames as if to invite a conversation.  “You don’t know me yet,” they suggest, “but we could be friends.”  The artist, a self-described optimist, earned her BA at Gettysburg College, MFA at Penn State University, and PhD in Art Technology, at NYU.  The richly detailed drawings by Bill Ross provoke discussion. These works reward careful inspection with additional information, and viewers tend to linger to discern the full import of each image. The artist, who is self-taught, addresses themes as distant as the Old Testament story of David and Goliath, and as current as The Jersey Devil.

The collective body of art created by members of the ASMC is diverse in its content, style, media, and expansive talent. Many of the artists come from professional backgrounds of teaching, banking, finance, marketing, to name a few, but all hold a common passion and energy: their love of art, need to communicate an idea or message, and a desire to inspire their viewer.

Their unique interpretation often holds a common thread:  a play on color, use of light, a view of nature, and a love of local landscape.  Others hold a more abstract vision where the viewer is lead into the piece by its dynamic movement of shapes and color. Each artist works their magic to bring the viewer into thought, share a message, tell a story, or find solace in the pure beauty that captures their eye.”

The Art Society of Monmouth County (ASMC), whose members participate in juried and non-juried shows throughout Monmouth County dates back to the 1950s, meet six times a year to build community and offer educational demonstrations. Among these artists you may find an old friend or make a new one.
