What brought you to Brookdale?
I always thought Brookdale was an amazing place. I especially admired two professors very much: Dr. Carl Calendar and Professor Kevin Hayter. Their students loved them and were genuinely excited to be in their classes. I thought maybe one day I could be as cool as those two were and actually teach at Brookdale. It took a long time, but I finally got hired full-time in 2002. I’ve never regretted it for a second. So many good things have happened to me here.

Describe one or more of your biggest achievements as a Brookdale faculty member:
I have served as Director of Brookdale’s Center for World War II Studies and Conflict Resolution, and I’ve also done a great deal of research and writing concerning the Holocaust with a survivor named Leslie Schwartz, whom I first met at Brookdale in 2009. We’ve done important work and our ideas about conflict resolution and healing intergenerational trauma are finding resonance all over the world.

Do you work outside of the college?
I also teach at Monmouth County Arts High School. The class is one day a week at Neptune High School. Arts High is a terrific program that is designed to mentor gifted students and point them toward careers in the arts. It’s a wonderful experience.

What would you say is your most memorable moment – or moments – as a member of the Brookdale community?
I really enjoy mentoring students, and I get a great feeling when I see students succeed and reach their goals. I feel like I really help to change lives for the better, and that’s the best job on earth. Many of my students, for example, have published books that began as independent study projects, and it is really exciting to mentor them through the publishing process.

Would you recommend that students take a class in your department?
Our department is fabulous. We have so many amazing and talented professors. I can say with complete confidence that what we offer in terms of Creative Writing and English is as good as any program in the United States. Students can’t go wrong at Brookdale.
