The International Education Center’s Global Citizenship Project continues our programming theme: One World: Environmental Issues. Many of the events this term are sponsored by other departments and student clubs. We are happy to collaborate by helping to promote and support these important activities expanding our knowledge of the environment.

Virtual Study Abroad Fair sponsored by College Consortium for International Studies and Brookdale’s International Education Center. At this event, you can learn about J-Term, Spring, Summer and Fall study and internship opportunities by visiting virtual booths.
You can also stop by Brookdale’s virtual booth at 11:30 am to learn about Brookdale’s study abroad processes.

This won’t be your average virtual experience (we’re Zoom-fatigued too!). You’ll be able to roam around freely in our virtual space during the study abroad fair to find your perfect program and talk to the CCIS Study Abroad institutions and program sponsors. The Importance of Sustainability and Social Justice in the Fashion Industry (pre and post-COVID)
hosted by Professor Annmarie Hughes. Professor Hughes will share her experience as an entrepreneur as she discusses the subjects of global sourcing, sustainability, and social justice as they pertain to the fashion industry. Professor Hughes will also discuss historical practices and explore innovative technologies and pathways for the future of the fashion industry as it grapples with COVID-19 and systemic racism.

91 Days Countless Nights (Photos of Superstorm Sandy)
Kevin R. Burkitt’s photographic journey “91 Days; Countless Nights” documents the devastation of Superstorm Sandy’s destruction from 2012 through 2015. To date this project has been shown at Morris Arts, Princeton Television, Main Street Gallery in Manasquan, and at Brookdale Community College in the CVA Gallery.

Effects of Poverty on the Environment
hosted by Dr. Terry Konn. Dr. Konn is a Fulbright scholar who has traveled to several developing nations and impoverished parts of the United States and has seen firsthand the environmental impact of poverty and poor governmental infrastructure. In this session, Professor Konn will discuss various impediments to the reduction and management of waste and its effect on public health.

Environmental Disaster Response in Sri Lanka and Haiti
hosted by Professor Harry Compton. Having worked at the Environmental Protection Agency for 34 years (prior to his arrival at Brookdale), Professor Compton has traveled to many communities to mitigate the impact of environmental disasters. In this session, Professor Compton will share his extensive experience in responding to crises in diverse locations, paying particular attention to his governmental work in Sri Lanka and Haiti.

A scholar in the field of immigration studies, Dr. Zampogna-Krug will address the polarizing and complex issue of a border wall from an environmental perspective, shining a light on the history of the US-Mexico border wall and the communities and living organisms most impacted by its construction.
