Oliver de la Paz is the author of five collections of poetry and is the co-editor of A Face to Meet the Faces: An Anthology of Contemporary Persona Poetry. He co-chairs the advisory board of Kundiman, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of Asian American Poetry.

Jennifer Franklin is the author of No Small Gift and Looming. She directs and teaches at The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center and is coeditor of Slapering Hol Press.

“As a result of this investment, thousands of New Jerseyans are able to embark on career pathways, to prepare for jobs that pay family-supporting wages, and to contribute directly to the state's economic growth and recovery” according to Aaron Fichtner, President of the New Jersey Council of County Colleges.

The Community College Opportunity Grant program provides a last-dollar scholarship to attend a community college for individuals in households earning $65,000 adjusted gross income or less, assisting more than 18,000 students last year.

This is Megan’s story... “Brookdale was always my first choice for many reasons. I never had the desire to go away to a four-year college, & I didn’t want to graduate & have hefty student loans to pay off before I started my career.
The DMSO (Diagnostic Medical Sonography) program is for students who wish to become registered Ultrasound Techs. My plan was never to become an Ultrasound Tech; in fact, I never thought about this until my counselor mentioned it. That counseling session changed the course of my life – literally. The entire program is just under 1 year. The program only takes 10 people each year, & so, as you can imagine, it’s very competitive & extremely intensive.
You begin immediately with clinical hours & lecture. I am a hands-on learner so clinical was where I learned just about everything I needed to know about Ultrasound. I was placed at an incredible clinical site. This program & the instructors, as well as the techs at the clinical sites are the reason I am where I am presently. I started the DMSO program when I was 21, finished it at 22, & now I’m 23 with my first year as an Ultrasound Technologist under my belt. I got hired at my clinical site just 2 months after taking & passing my board exams which are needed in order to get/apply for jobs after graduating. I am living out my dream, working with the most incredible people who have also become my greatest friends & work “family,” & doing exactly what I went to school for.
I’m proud of myself for all I have accomplished with the help of Brookdale. This school gave me so many opportunities that I don’t think I would’ve gotten had I gone to a different school.
I hope my story sparks interest in someone who wants to go into the healthcare field but isn’t sure what they want to do. In the end, it’s worth the amount of work & dedication that is needed. This program was the best thing to happen to me in terms of my career, even if at the time the workload felt impossible.” #SoulsOfBrookdale
