What brought you to Brookdale?
I interviewed at a few community colleges and what struck me about Brookdale was the friendly and welcoming atmosphere from the staff I met on my way to my interview. I felt a sense of community.
Describe one or more of your biggest achievements as a Brookdale faculty member:
One of my main achievements has been serving as co-advisor to the Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology (W.E.S.T.) Club, where I could directly impact and support young women interested in a career in STEM. This club also facilitates a mentoring program where participants can receive personal attention to their specific needs such as finding a transfer college, researching scholarships, and networking with professionals in their desired field.
Another highlight for me was to design and create a hands-on activity with an element of civil engineering that I facilitated with over 100 high school students. I later used the activity to engage with middle school Girl Scouts, and with new Brookdale students participating in the College Readiness Now program. More recently I have been appointed to the position of Assistant Department Chair.
What would you say is your most memorable moment – or moments – as a member of the Brookdale community?
I like to help people, and one of my memorable moments involved serving as a French translator to help Francophone students communicate with their professor. I also helped a potential international student obtain information about transferring to Brookdale.
What do you think separates Brookdale from other colleges?
I think Brookdale gives its students a personal experience in the classroom. The professors are caring, we make a point to connect with students, and we foster a comfortable learning atmosphere. The Math Lab in our department has Academic Tutors and we are all here to help our students succeed.
