Austin Smith of Marlboro township, a 2021 graduate of Brookdale Community College, was elected by his peers and recently sworn in as the 2021-2022 Graduate Trustee on July 20th. He will be recognized at the August 24th Board of Trustees meeting and is replacing the 2020-2021 Graduate Trustee Hanna Walker who, served as a valuable board member.

The graduate trustee is the student voice on the college’s board of trustees. This seat is filled annually through student elections. A mechanical engineering major, Smith said he wants to give back to the college since Brookdale has given so much to him and has made him the person he is today.

Involved in the college as a student, he was president of the Student Life Board (SLB), he tripled the SLB’s general membership, convened monthly meetings with the College president, presided over several of the SLB’s committees and even won a Gold Star award for President of the Year. Smith also served as vice president of the Asia Society, vice president of the Russian Club, served as parliamentarian of the Student Life Board, was a member of the Physics and Astronomy Club, Math Club and Engineering Student Association.

In a statement posted during the election, Smith said he hopes to aid in the campus re-opening and assure that the students are aware of all the services Brookdale provides for those impacted by Covid-19.
