In today’s ever-increasing competitive marketplace, it’s essential to gain valuable work experience prior to earning an undergraduate degree.

Brookdale’s Erica Mittenzwei plans to work in the finance industry and an internship with Commvault has provided her with hands-on experience and insights. She began working at the Tinton-Falls based data protection and information management software company last May as a tax/finance intern.

“I’ve been able to apply knowledge gained from the classroom to real-world scenarios, which is rewarding and exciting,” said Mittenzwei, a Hazlet, NJ resident. “The opportunity to gain a foothold in an industry where I want to start a career through networking in is another benefit.”

She credits advice from Career and Leadership Development (CLD) staff in helping to fine-tune her resume and interviewing skills through workshops and mock interviews. She encourages Brookdale students to visit the CLD Office for information about internships, career information resources and research/interviewing assistance.

Mittenzwei, a business administration major at Brookdale, plans to pursue a double major in finance and management at a four-year institution in fall 2019. She is an active presence on the Brookdale campus and in the local community. Mittenzwei is an officer with the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society (PTK) at Brookdale. As Vice President of Scholarship for Brookdale’s PTK chapter, she developed her leadership skills and ability to collaborate with diverse groups. Mittenzwei cites the chapter’s opioid awareness series in the fall as a key chapter achievements.

“I have worked with Erica as her manager where she utilized her communication and detail-oriented skills to deliver great results in her role of tax intern. She is an independent worker and quick learner. Erica’s extraordinary positive attitude, drive and willingness to help made her a stand-out member of the tax team.”

“I realize that not everyone has received the same opportunities that I have,” said Mittenzwei. “That’s why I am as involved in community service as a way toward giving back.”
