The Center for Holocaust, Human Rights, and Genocide Education (Chhange) at Brookdale will host the New Jersey State Yom HaShoah Commemoration, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on May 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This year’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust will feature keynote speaker Dr. Agnes Grunwald-Spier. She is a child survivor of the Holocaust and author of Women in the Holocaust: In their Own Words, which uses diaries, memoirs, letters, and personal interviews of women to explain how women’s difficulties during the Holocaust were different than those of men. The book explores the unique challenges women faced during the Holocaust including pregnancy, abortion, caring for family after men were arrested, sexual abuse, and medical experimentation.

The program will also include a candle-lighting ceremony featuring local Holocaust survivors who are escorted by sailors from Naval Weapons Station Earle and a musical performance by a local high school choir.

Copies of Women in the Holocaust: In their Own Words will be available for purchase and signing after the commemoration.

All are invited to this free remembrance event sponsored by the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, the Jewish Federation in the Heartland of New Jersey and the Jewish War Veterans of the United State, Jersey Shore Post.  The event will take place in the Navesink Rooms of the Warner Student Life Center.
