LINCROFT, NJ (April 29, 2015) – Brookdale Community College honor students Brian Nowak and Nicholas Sakowski are among the 37 scholars selected to this year’s New Jersey All-State Academic Team.

Nowak, of Manalapan, and Sakowski, of Aberdeen, will be honored for their achievements by the New Jersey Council of Community Colleges at a May 7 recognition ceremony in Trenton.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be recognized for our hard work, and the work of all our professors and advisors as well,” said Sakowski. “We’re extremely proud of what we accomplished this year.”

The All-State Academic Team honors are sponsored by the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), the Coca-Cola Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society for community colleges.

Honorees are selected from New Jersey’s 19 community colleges for their achievements and community service projects, and are eligible for annual scholarships.

Nowak and Sakowski were recognized for their work with Brookdale’s PTK chapter on a year-long “Breaking Down Boundaries” initiative, which has called attention to global human rights issues and raised funds to build a water well in Ghana.

“These students took full advantage of the tremendous opportunities our community colleges offer,” said NJEA President Wendell Steinhauer of the 2015 honorees. “They are well along the path to achieving their dreams and we wish them continued success.”
