Helping those in need and building bridges with communities – those two goals are at the core of the Brookdale Employee Volunteer Connection’s mission. The group of Brookdale employees, students, retirees, alumni and others is now preparing for the 2019 Empty Bowls program on April 16th taking place in the Jersey Blues Dining Room and Larrison Hall on the Lincroft Campus and the Freehold and Wall campuses.

For a $6 donation or other free will offering, individuals purchase ceramic bowls and also receive soup and/or dessert prepared and donated by staff and students from Brookdale’s Culinary Arts program. The event last year raised more than $1,400 for three organizations, including Brookdale’s Helping Hands.

“The Brookdale community has been very generous throughout the years in supporting this event, and we are very grateful,” said Ann Marie Alfieri, administrative assistant-regional sites and partnerships. Alfieri and Helen Vota, operations manager of the Scroll & Pen Bookstore, are the co-chairs of the Volunteer Connection.

The local organizations who will benefit from the 2019 program include Brookdale’s own Helping Hands which collects and distributes free food items to students in need. Other organizations benefitting from this year’s event include the local Monmouth County Food Banks, including Bradley Food Pantry in Bradley Beach and Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Union Beach.
