The In the Gallery Series at Brookdale’s Center for Visual Arts (CVA) Gallery continues with artist Jess Leo’s show past/presence(s) from November 18 through December 13.

Leo, who was born and raised in New Jersey, is now a Brooklyn-based artist. In 2016, Leo won an Emerging Artist Award for her work in a cross-cultural exhibition in New York City. She currently teaches college art and design in New York City and New Jersey. Drawing was and remains an important medium for Leo as she explores the themes of grief, trauma and isolation.

“Drafting with a sculptural approach, my work is both intimate and monumental as it focuses on domestic objects and architecture,” said Leo. “The work is physical as I continuously build marks on a large format in search of what has been lost. These seemingly detached portrayals become both abstract and sentimental.”

Meet artist Jess Leo during the Artist Talk on Thursday, December 5 at 11:30 a.m. Visitors can hear Leo talk about her work and view the show. An artist’s reception takes place that same evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
