Last fall, the First-Gen Trailblazer Scholarship became the first scholarship dedicated to supporting first-generation college students at Brookdale Community College. An ambitious and determined student, Sara Calvo was honored as the inaugural recipient and recently shared her heartfelt gratitude for its impact on her journey.

“As a first-generation college student, I have often felt lost navigating this path. This scholarship provides vital financial support and reinforces my belief in my potential,” Sara expressed in her thank-you note.

Sara, who plans to transfer to a four-year, research-focused institution next fall to pursue her passion for STEM, has demonstrated exceptional academic leadership and a deep commitment to her community. As Vice President of Service for Phi Theta Kappa, she initiated a challenge encouraging students to dedicate 35 hours to community service over the academic year.

“This experience has been incredibly fulfilling, and I am excited to see the positive impact we can make together,” she added.

The First-Gen Trailblazer Scholarship provides more than financial assistance; it delivers a powerful message of support to students who are the first in their families to navigate the college experience.

Building on the success of this inaugural scholarship, the Brookdale Foundation now has an opportunity to offer another First-Gen Trailblazer Scholarship in Spring 2025. To make this possible, we need your help. By contributing to the First-Gen Scholarship through the Foundation’s webpage donation link, you can ensure that deserving students like Sara receive the support and encouragement they need to thrive.

Your gift will make a lasting impact by empowering first-generation students to believe in themselves, achieve their goals, and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Together, we can continue creating opportunities for students like Sara, ensuring every first-generation student feels supported, celebrated, and confident on their path to success.
