The Triangle Award, one of Brookdale Community College’s most esteemed honors, is presented annually to a student who embodies the values of leadership, service, and academic perseverance. This year, the award was proudly bestowed upon Jean Guerdy Paul, affectionately known as “JP”—a student leader whose impact on the college community will be felt for years to come.

A native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, JP arrived at Brookdale in 2018 to begin his ESL studies. What began as a hopeful step into a new country quickly evolved into a transformational journey of leadership, advocacy, and connection. Despite facing significant hardships, including the loss of his academic sponsors during the COVID-19 pandemic, JP turned adversity into opportunity—immersing himself in campus life and uplifting those around him.

From serving as President of multiple student organizations to becoming a proud recipient of numerous scholarships and leadership awards, JP earned a reputation as “Mr. Brookdale,” “Mr. Many Hats,” “The Mayor,” and “Mr. Everywhere.” His service culminated in being elected Graduate Trustee by the Class of 2024, a role he now steps into with pride and purpose.

During the 2025 commencement ceremony, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Latonya Brennan presented JP with the Triangle Award, celebrating his extensive contributions and unwavering spirit. In a symbolic gesture of continuity, JP passed his trustee notebook to incoming Graduate Trustee Montez Swartz, entrusting him to carry forward the voice of Brookdale’s student body.

Dr. Katie Lynch, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs praised JP’s service, stating,

“JP, thank you for your dedicated service as a highly esteemed member of the Brookdale Community College Board of Trustees. Your contributions on board committees and your monthly student perspective reports have been invaluable to the success of the board.”

Over the years, JP took on several leadership roles, including President of the International Student Association, Circle K International, and the Christian Club. He also became a Frank Whyman Scholar, Wilbur Ray Scholar, and a two-time National Society of Leadership and Success scholarship winner. His commitment to service earned him numerous accolades, including three Gold Stars for volunteerism and over 30 leadership certificates.

JP’s own words capture the essence of his legacy:

“My journey is rich with moments that resonate with creativity, resilience, and the desire to uplift others… If my experiences ignite even a spark of motivation in you, I consider myself the wealthiest person in the world. I am grateful to God, my family, and everybody who supported me in my journey.”

Now pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at NJIT, JP continues to inspire through action, compassion, and an unshakable belief in the power of community.

Brookdale is not just where JP studied—it’s where he belonged, led, and left a legacy.
